U14 Girls Match Reports

Games on Sun 9th Nov 08

Following defeats in their first two Midlands Conference games our Girls travelled to Leeds to take on the hosts the “new kids on the block”, Leeds Carnegie and the ever-strong Doncaster Panthers.

Game 1t Leeds Carnegie36 Warriors 35

The first quarter saw us fall behind by 8, at 16 – 8. Leeds pulled away with two quick baskets at the start of the second period but our girls then took control of the game. They scored 9 points without response to go into the half down by just 4 at 20 – 17.

The third quarter was undoubtedly our best of the afternoon. We dominated play completely and went into the final period up by 7. Sadly, we could not sustain our initiative in the final quarter and we ultimately lost out agonisingly by just 1 point.

Game 2 Doncaster Panthers 31 Warriors 27

A bad first period saw us struggle do well defensively but struggle to score. As a result we were down by 8 at 9 – 1 at the buzzer. We contested the second period far better and were down by 9 at the half.

The second half was very much ours. We won the third by 2 and the fourth by 3. Sadly this was nit enough to close the gap and the Panthers ultimately ran out winners by 4.

Summery

Despite the two defeats on the day Coach Mike Douch was delighted with the efforts of his girls. The two games represented a huge improvement from last week’s initial encounters. We could and should have won both games. If we had we would have been 50% for the ffour and been in mid table.

Our defence was significantly better than in the first two games with Rachel Mantey leading the way as our top rebounder. Rachael also had an excellent day, scoring 13 across the two games. Hannah Perry had an outstanding debut, scoring 14 on the day and Tammy Saunders showed her enormous potential on offence, scoring 12 points, Catrina Yang showed super athleticism all round the court, adding 12 across the two games.

We look forward to our next two games this weekend, which are at home at Sport TCAT on Sunday.
